AlterG® Anti-Gravity treadmill ™

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, developed with NASA technology, removes rehabilitation barriers by providing control over weight-bearing and balance over other options such as hydrotherapy or harnesses. It empowers people through the rehabilitation process, improves wellness and mobility recovery, and enhances physical performance. Move unrestricted and pain-free while restoring and building muscle strength, function, balance, and more.

The AltgerG can reduce gravitational load and body weight in precise 1% increments using a pressurised air chamber. This allows us to be deliberate in reducing gravitational weight in relation to your body weight, providing unrestricted movement. While primarily used for rehabilitation, AlterG can also benefit athletes looking to relieve joint pressure and push their training further.

AlterG can also assist with the following:

  • Strengthening for neurological patients
  • Aid in strengthening and conditioning safely for older patients
  • Mobility aid where pain is a limiting factor
  • Sports conditioning
  • Post-physiotherapy rehabilitation following an injury or surgery

The AlterG is a new addition to At The Core. It continues our consistent effort to provide patients and athletes with options to aid and support their wellness and rehabilitation journey without the intervention of surgery. Benefit from timely results and regain the power in your life through Alter G and At The Core Support.

Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have an MRI or Xray report please bring this with you - it is not a necessity, but can be helpful. If you are on medications, please bring a list of these with you as we understand sometimes the names can be hard to remember.

What do I need to wear?

Physiotherapy requires movement, often involves doing some exercises and for the physiotherapist to be able to see as much of the area being assessed as possible, so you’ll need to wear appropriate clothing and/or underwear. Please make sure you’re wearing shorts and t-shirt, or trousers that can be easily rolled up to assess a knee, or a string top for shoulder assessments.

How long is a treatment session?

A physiotherapy session lasts 45 minutes. The first session will include an assessment of your current condition and any influencing factors (occupation, activity), along with your general health and past medical history. This will also involve postural and movement assessments to provide a full picture of your requirements.. If a person has multiple issues, more than one session will be required to assess everything.

Does physiotherapy involve massage?

It can, but it’s usually for symptom relief if the patient is unable to tolerate much movement. Physiotherapy usually involves exercises that gradually increase strength and increase the damaged tissues tolerance.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is individual and depending on your case, the physiotherapist will give you an estimate as to what they think will be best. If we don’t think you need to be seen we will tell you accordingly.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat most conditions related to the bones, muscles and joints, but if you’re unsure you can contact us and we’ll talk through your issues and give you an honest opinion as to whether we can help you or not.

Do you do virtual physiotherapy sessions?

Yes, we are fully equipped to do virtual sessions. We can help talk through your problem and give you advice and exercises via video or phone conversations. These are the same price as our in-person sessions.

Soft Tissue Therapy FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

How can it help?

The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively.

Can sports massage benefit you?

Whether you are preparing for your next marathon, suffering with sore shoulders from sitting at a desk all day or aching following too much gardening, sports/deep tissue massage can relieve these aches and pains.

Your first visit...

Your first visit will last for 45 minutes and will include an assessment of your current condition and any influencing factors (occupation, activity), along with your general health and past medical history. Anti gravity Treadmill FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

How many sessions are recommended to see results?

Many people see noticeable results and will retain some carryover from their first session. However, this largely depends on the person, their exact issue, and their diagnosis.

Do I need to do sessions consistently or within a short time frame of one another?

This depends on the issue and how many sessions might be needed for recovery. Typically, the more sessions done consistently within close proximity of one another, the more beneficial the results will be.

Are there any potential risks using Alter G?

Due to the technology and method of recovery delivery with AlterG, there aren't hazards to worry about. From a clinical perspective, the main precautions are severe cardiovascular issues, unresolved DVT, and unstable fractures or joints. AlterG, like all of our recovery options, is done at the clinician's professional discretion to assess the patient before
commencing a session.

Is Alter G also beneficial for individuals not going through rehabilitation?

Many professional athletes leverage AlterG for additional training and for the benefit of being able to slightly reduce their body weight. This alleviates pressure on the lower extremities and allows for "overtraining". It can also be an option for individuals looking to push their cardio past regular means by using the reduced body weight.

Extracorporeal Focus Shockwave Therapy FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

What is it?

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment, and works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to damaged tissues within the abnormal tendon.

What happens during shockwave therapy?

Your consultant will work with you to identify the exact area of pain and apply a gel-like substance to the area. A probe is pressed on to the affected area and the shockwaves are delivered through the skin  that spreads inside the injured tissue as an aspherical ‘radial' wave. These radial shockwaves initiate an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue that is being treated, and prompts the body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation, and oblating neovascularization.

Does it hurt?

The shockwaves are felt as pulses which are uncomfortable but should not be uncontrollably painful. Typically your first treatment will start with a low level of intensity and increase this to a point where you tolerate it.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically treatments are performed at 5-7 day intervals usually around 3 sessions up to 5 for stubborn problems. There is then a break of around 3-5 weeks before it can be treated again, if necessary.

Wattbike FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

Why a Wattbike

Good question. It’s a pretty specialised piece of kit, and within the fitness industry known for being pretty hard work regarding fitness. However, it’s ability to measure Left-to-Right power output (watts) allows us to look at an objective measure for people who have a lower limb injury during their recovery process.

How does it work?

It's when you're pedalling that the magic really happens. The Wattbike measures the progression of your foot 100 times during one single pedal revolution. It uses the data to calculate 40 different parameters, with a 2pc margin of accuracy, along with some computer wizardry it then gives you a power output (watts) total and left to right %. Click here to view explanatory video.

Do you need specialised footwear?

No - we have toe loops on ours, but if you have cycling shoes you can also use those as the pedals are dual use.

Does it fit everyone?

It fits most people, but like all pieces of equipment there is a limit to the one size fits all scenario. The smallest person that the bike will fit would be around 5ft (152cm) tall with an inside leg measurement of <24” (60cm).

What is the maximum body weight?

The maximum safe bodyweight to use the Wattbike is 23.6st or around 150kg.

Performance Coaching FAQ

Answers to the most common questions we get asked. Don't see your question answered? Request a call back.

Who is performance coaching for?

Anyone! Although this bespoke service is most often used by elite performing athletes or high profile business clients, it is in fact suitable for just about anyone. As long as there is a desire to improve and a willingness to commit, our performance coaching service can provide a solution for any individual wanting to optimise their fitness and performance.

What’s involved?

Initially a needs analysis is required, either in person or with a phone/video call. This enables us to build a plan that's right for you. An individual physical assessment with our physiotherapist and sports scientist follows, from which a starting point is established so that we can create a bespoke exercise programme. For some clients, the programme can include psychological performance training in addition to the physical plan. An essential element of performance is the individual's ability to focus correctly. When required, this service can provide mentoring in line with high performing sport and business. We will deliver a plan that fits with your lifestyle and your goals.

How long does it take to get started?

The assessment process will usually take 1hr-1h30, but given that each plan is bespoke these times may vary. We would hope that the programme commences within a week of the assessment. Once started, it normally takes 90 days to create behavioural changes and see physiological adaptations to exercises and nutrition, so it is important that the individual is prepared to commit.

How long does a session last?

Typically a coaching session, whether it's physical or consultancy, will last around 45 minutes, although some clients prefer 30 minutes and some 90 minutes. It depends on what's best for you.

How many sessions will I need?

You can have as many or as few coaching sessions as you like. It’s likely to depend on your skillset and where you’re starting from. We can operate over the phone or via the internet, so the sessions can easily fit around your schedule. Some people have one session per week, some once every month. We will shape your programme to suit you.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat most conditions related to the bones, muscles and joints, but if you’re unsure you can contact us and we’ll talk through your issues and give you an honest opinion as to whether we can help you or not.

Alice is our nutrition consultant. With a BSc in nutrition from the University of Surrey during her internship at the Surrey Human Performance Institute she focused on health and fitness testing in both amateurs and elite athletes. Her MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Oxford Brookes culminated in a research project on CBD and sleep. With a specific interest in nutrition, how it can improve recovery and help reduce chronic inflammation, Alice is a great addition to our team. With a focus on helping patients combat inflammation associated with health conditions that can affect mobility, Alice looks forward to helping patients on their wellness journeys through diet and nutrition.

Our ethos

The positive effect that a balanced and nutritional meal plan can have on the level of inflammation in our bodies is quite incredible. Each time we eat or drink is a chance for us to help delay and sometimes even prevent lifestyle disease.

Diet can be used to prevent and manage inflammatory related conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, colitis & metabolic syndrome, the latter being closely linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity & high blood pressure.  While food choices will never fully prevent disease, it is important to recognise that what we put into our bodies has an enormous impact on body functionality. A fresh, colourful, seasonal diet rich in foods that help us manage inflammation is key to our health.
